0DTE has a reputation. It's earned. It's also aimed at the wrong culprit.
0DTE means zero days to expiration. An option bought and settled the same day. The reputation: the casino corner of the market, where accounts go to die.
Here's what's actually true about a same-day option. Options lose value as time passes (traders call it theta decay; a rain check is worth less on day 29 than on day 1). On the last day there's almost no time value left to pay for. That buys you three things:
• Premiums are small. The structures we'll meet this week often cost $50 to $270 total. The same structures with a month of life cost several times more. • Verdicts are same-day. The trade resolves by 4:00 PM. No overnight gaps. No waking up to bad news out of Asia. You're flat when you sleep, every night. • Moves are honest. With no time left, an option's value tracks the index almost one for one. What the market does is what your position does.
So where do 0DTE traders actually blow up? Two places. Neither one is the calendar.
1 · Sizing. Cheap premiums whisper buy more. A trader with $5,000 who would never put half the account on one stock will casually buy 20 contracts of a $1.20 option. That's $2,400. 48% of the account. On one same-day idea. The clock didn't do that. The size did.
2 · Undefined risk. Some traders sell naked 0DTE options to collect premium with no floor under the trade. That's yesterday's payoff line falling off the chart. It works right up until one afternoon it really, really doesn't.
Notice that both failure modes are choices. Both are structural. And both are exactly what this desk's rules exist to kill. Every trade has a floor (that's tomorrow), and every trade is sized small, a fixed fraction of the account, decided before entry. Never in the heat of the moment.
One more reason SPX specifically is the right arena: it's cash-settled and European-style. No early assignment, no shares, no surprises. The trade you put on is exactly the trade that settles.
Same-day options aren't a strategy. They're a venue. Bad structure in that venue loses fast. Disciplined structure gets small premiums, same-day verdicts, and honest pricing. Tomorrow we build the floor.
Into the close, The Desk
P.S. "Risk is a choice you make before entry" might be the only sentence in this course worth framing. Tomorrow makes it literal.
