Time to build the trade this club is named after.
Yesterday you built a vertical spread. Buy one option, sell one option. A butterfly is just two of them back to back, sharing a middle strike:
BUY 1 call at 5,965 SELL 2 calls at 5,970 ← the shared middle BUY 1 call at 5,975
Why would anybody do that? Look at what each piece wants. The lower spread (5,965/5,970) is a bet that SPX rises to 5,970. The upper spread (5,970/5,975), which you've effectively sold, is a bet that it stops there. Put them together and you've got a wager that SPX finishes near 5,970 exactly. Traders call that a pin.
The payoff picture, which you can read now:
THE BUTTERFLY: MAX PROFIT AT THE TARGET, THE DEBIT IS THE MAX LOSS BOTH DIRECTIONS |
• Floor: whatever you paid. On a 0DTE afternoon this thing often costs $1.00 or less. $100 max loss, total, both directions. That cheapness is a 0DTE gift: with no time value left, the middle options you're selling still fetch real premium. • Peak: at the middle strike. A 5-wide fly bought for $1.00 pays up to $5.00 minus the $1.00, so $400 on a perfect pin. • Breakevens: middle, plus or minus (width minus cost). The pin doesn't have to be perfect. Just close.
Risk $100 to make up to $400. The catch, and it's a real one: the market has to cooperate. Pins don't happen on demand. So the desk never trades butterflies on a hunch. It trades them at 3:25 PM, 35 minutes to the bell, after the afternoon has already shown its hand. If six timeframes of trend evidence agree on a direction, the fly goes where that drift is heading. If the evidence isn't there? No trade. That's a system working, not a system slacking.
One upgrade before you go. Slide the wings so one is closer than the other and you get the broken-wing butterfly, the desk's main event. The lopsided shape is built so a move through the target in our direction can't hurt us. Only a full reversal can, and there's a rule for that too.
Tomorrow, the other side of the coin. Instead of buying a cheap structure and hoping for a pin, we sell one in the morning and get paid for the market doing nothing at all.
Into the close, The Desk
P.S. That peak shape is on every card, banner, and logo we publish. Now you know it's not decoration. It's the trade.
